I started volunteering at the Lee County Library last week. My first day was spent shelving books and talking to the other librarians. Today, I actually got to assist patrons.
Two young boys wanted books on Greek mythology, specifically, monsters in Greek mythology. I flashed back to when I was a kid; I read all the books about Greek myths I could get my hands on. When I mentioned the incident to Melissa, one of the librarians, she said the boys may have latched onto the topic from reading Rick Riordan's novels. I love how one great story can spark interest in a topic.
However, the best moment today came a little earlier. When I was enrolled in the Library Science program at the University of Southern Mississippi, one of the classes discussed how libraries historically were the places where immigrants went in order to get information necessary to obtain citizenship status. A woman who appeared to be from the Near East asked me for help finding English as a Second Language.
How wonderful to be involved in the ways libraries serve communities! Melissa asked if I would be willing to write up book reviews on the Fans of the Lee County Library Facebook profile. Naturally! Hopefully, we'll get some of the young adult crowd involved, too.
More to come later when I return next Wednesday.
